Our humble abode for the night. David couldn't sleep in it straight, so we had to sleep diagonally. He has since banned that tent from future camp-out's...
For our friend Glen's birthday, his wife Heather planned a 4wheeling trip for him since he hasn't ever really ridden before. I can't remember the name of the place we went, but it is just past King Mountain campground up Chickaloon way. It was the perfect sunny day for it--I didn't even get cold and all I had on was my sweater! The views were amazing and the trail was pretty well maintained and dry for the most part. I was hoping to see some bigger wildlife, but all we got was a swan on the ride home. I guess that's better than a bear in my tent though...So along the way we ran into a couple of guys that were able to help us get on the right trail. Apparently we weren't on the trail we thought we were so we didn't get to do the loop we intended, but things worked themselves out and we were able to ride for a while and camp up by a river. It was fun to be out and about. I'm so glad we have friends who plan fun adventures and like to include us! Once we made camp Bryan cooked us some wonderful steak dinners and berry cobbler dessert. In case you were wondering, Bryan is the dutch oven master (it's in the Scoresby blood, I think). And of course it wouldn't be a real man's camp out without firing some weapons. Glen brought his hand gun that was really loud and had a kick. I shot it once and that was good enough for me. I liked the .22 riffle best. It was little and I could shoot pretty good with it. David says it's the bb gun of riffles, which is just fine by me. (I'm rather good with the bb gun.) We went through quite a bit of ammo and shot up a couple of old bottles we found. It was a good time. It rained on and off and lightly sprinkled for the trip home, which made one part of the trail particularly difficult. We weren't able to go back through the way we came since the rain had made the ruts too rutty (is that even a word?) and someone going up was in the process of pulling himself out, so we had to find an alternate route. The picture doesn't do it justice, but we had to basically rock climb with the machines one by one down this ravine. It was kinda scetchy, but Bryan is pretty much Heman and knows 4wheelers pretty well, so we were ok. I kept thinking about the pioneers and how the heck did they do that kind of stuff in hand carts and wagons. It was intense for me and we had power. I can't imagine what they had to go through without the modern day technology and engines! All and all it was a fun time and I'm glad we were able to be a part of it. Happy birthday to Glen, happy solstice and happy father's day all rolled into one. |
